Dear Ella,
Thanks for your email! Don't worry about missing my birthday — it was great, and I'm glad you wrote.
In Russia, popular birthday gifts are usually flowers, chocolates, money or something useful for the home. I normally celebrate my birthday at home with my family: we have a big dinner, a cake with candles and lots of photos. Sometimes I invite my closest friends too. The best gift I've ever got was a new smartphone from my parents — I really needed one for school.
Your trip to London sounds exciting! How long are you going to stay there? Who are you travelling with? What places do you want to visit first?
Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Alex
