1) Zoos are popular places to visit because they give people a chance to see exotic animals from other countries without travelling far. Families with children especially enjoy them, as kids find it exciting to watch lions, monkeys and elephants at close range.
2) In my opinion, the main functions of zoos are education and the conservation of rare species. They also give city dwellers an opportunity to learn more about wildlife and to spend a pleasant day outdoors.
3) I think zoos can help protect the future of some endangered species, because they breed animals in captivity and then release them into the wild. However, this only works if the programmes are well organised and properly funded.
4) The main advantage of keeping animals in zoos is that they are safe, fed and treated by vets. The disadvantage is that they lose their freedom and sometimes suffer from stress in small enclosures.
5) I am generally against keeping animals in zoos, because wild animals should live in their natural habitat. Still, I admit that modern zoos do important work in saving species that would otherwise disappear.
