Many people spend hours watching sports competitions. This raises a question: is taking part in sport better than simply watching it? In my opinion, playing sport is definitely more beneficial than being a spectator.
Firstly, regular physical activity keeps us healthy. It strengthens the heart, muscles and immune system, while sitting on a sofa with snacks does the opposite. Secondly, sport teaches valuable qualities such as discipline, patience and teamwork, which are useful in study and career. Finally, playing brings real emotions: the joy of victory and the bitterness of defeat are far stronger when you are on the pitch yourself.
However, some people argue that watching sport is also worthwhile. It is accessible to everyone, including those with health problems, and it unites fans, giving them a feeling of belonging to a big community. Moreover, professional matches show beautiful technique that amateurs can learn from.
Nevertheless, I cannot fully agree with this position. Watching is a passive activity, and it can never replace the benefits of movement. Supporters may feel part of a team, but this feeling is borrowed, not earned. As for learning technique, one can watch a short video and then practise on a real court.
To sum up, although being a fan has its pleasures, playing sport is clearly better because it improves health, builds character and gives genuine emotions. Everyone should find a sport they enjoy and take part in it rather than only watch others.
