Summer holidays are a long-awaited time for teenagers in Zetland, and many of them choose to spend these weeks at a youth camp. The results of an opinion poll show what attracts young people there most of all.
According to the table, the leading reason is the wish to make new friends, chosen by 55% of the respondents. Another 15% of teenagers go to camps mainly to take part in fun activities, while 12% are eager to visit new places.
Comparing the figures, the gap between the top reason and the second one is striking: making new friends is almost four times as popular as taking part in fun activities. This suggests that communication, rather than entertainment, is the main value of a camp for Zetland teenagers. Interestingly, becoming more independent is the least popular reason, mentioned by only 8% of the respondents.
However, a serious problem can arise at a youth camp: conflicts with other teenagers or even bullying, which can ruin the whole holiday. A possible solution is for the camp staff to organise team-building games and to appoint counsellors whom children can turn to with any complaint.
In conclusion, I believe that summer youth camps are extremely important, because they give teenagers a chance to socialise, try new activities and grow personally, which is hard to achieve during a normal school year.
