Choosing a university major is one of the most important decisions young people face, and in Zetland many school-leavers are increasingly drawn to the humanities. A recent survey asked young Zetlanders why they had chosen this path, and the results reveal a clear pattern.
According to the table, the most popular reason is a love for creativity, named by 37% of respondents. Interesting subjects come second, chosen by 28% of those surveyed, while public significance is mentioned by a further 20%.
Comparing the leading motives is revealing. Love for creativity is more than four times as popular as the variety of jobs upon graduation, which attracted only 9%. This suggests that young people are guided mainly by personal interest rather than by career prospects, which may later cause disappointment on the job market.
One problem with studying the humanities is that graduates often struggle to find well-paid employment, since their skills can seem less directly applicable than technical ones. A sensible solution is for universities to offer compulsory internships and practical courses in communication, analytics and project work, so that students gain marketable experience alongside academic knowledge.
In conclusion, I believe that choosing the right profession is essential, because it determines both our financial stability and our daily satisfaction. However, the right choice should balance genuine passion with realistic career planning, so that enthusiasm for creativity does not turn into frustration after graduation.
