Living conditions in rural areas are an important topic, as students decide whether to stay in villages or move to cities. The survey conducted among Zetland school students shows what they believe should be improved in rural areas.
According to the table, the most popular answer is building hospitals and schools, chosen by 48% of the respondents. Improving internet access is supported by 20% of the students, while organising more cultural events is mentioned by 18%. These figures show that basic public services are the top priority for young people in Zetland.
Comparing the data, the gap between the leading option and the second one is significant: 48% versus 20%, which is more than twice as many. This suggests that students see healthcare and education as far more urgent than digital infrastructure. Interestingly, developing public transport is the least popular option, at only 5%, even though it is often a serious problem in villages.
One possible problem of rural life is limited access to medical care: in many villages the nearest hospital is dozens of kilometres away. A reasonable solution is to open small local clinics and provide regular mobile medical teams, which would make healthcare more accessible without building large hospitals everywhere.
In my opinion, the best way to improve rural living conditions is to invest in basic services first, especially healthcare and education, because they directly affect people's quality of life. Once these needs are met, other improvements, such as better internet and cultural events, will naturally follow.
