Agriculture has always been the foundation of human survival, yet today it is also a field of innovation, which is why many young Zetlanders decide to major in agricultural sciences. The survey results reveal what motivates these students most.
According to the table, the leading reason is environmental concerns, chosen by 37% of respondents. Another 28% say they want to feed everyone, while 20% are attracted by research opportunities.
A comparison of the top and bottom positions is striking: environmental concerns are more than six times as popular as practical skills development, which was selected by only 6%. This gap suggests that young people view agriculture primarily as a way to address global challenges rather than as a source of hands-on experience. Interestingly, job stability, at 9%, is also far less important than idealistic motives.
However, studying agricultural sciences has a serious drawback: many programmes are too theoretical, so graduates lack the practical skills employers expect. A possible solution is to make internships on real farms and in laboratories a compulsory part of the curriculum.
In my opinion, agricultural professionals are extremely important today, because they must feed a growing population while protecting the environment. Without their expertise, neither food security nor sustainable development can be achieved.
