Reading preferences among teenagers are a popular subject of discussion, and our project set out to find which literary genres attract young readers in Zetland. The results of the opinion polls show a clear picture of what teenagers choose when they pick up a book.
According to the table, fantasy is the most popular genre, chosen by 30% of the respondents. Science fiction comes second with 25%, while detective, war, spy stories and thrillers are preferred by 20% of the teenagers. Classical literature, by contrast, is the least popular option, with only 10% of the readers.
Comparing the figures, fantasy is three times as popular as classical literature, which suggests that modern teenagers are drawn to imaginary worlds rather than to the classics. It is also worth noting that science fiction is chosen by 5 percentage points more readers than detective and spy stories, so interest in the future and technology clearly outweighs interest in crime and adventure plots.
However, a serious problem can arise with reading: many teenagers read only for entertainment and gradually lose the habit of reading anything challenging. To solve this, schools and families could organise book clubs where students discuss both popular and classical works, and teachers could recommend modern books that are connected with the classics.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that reading is extremely important for teenagers, because it develops imagination, vocabulary and critical thinking. Even light genres can become a first step towards a lifelong love of literature.
