Nowadays, environmental issues are widely discussed by young people, and our project explores which environmental problems Zetland teenagers consider the most dangerous. The aim of the project is to find out how the younger generation assesses the threats facing the planet.
According to the table, global warming is the leading concern, chosen by 44% of the respondents. Air pollution ranks second with 22%, while water pollution is mentioned by 16% of the teenagers. Deforestation and rare species extinction are regarded as the least dangerous, with only 12% and 6% respectively.
Comparing the figures, one can see that global warming is exactly twice as popular as air pollution, which shows that climate change dominates young people's worries. Interestingly, the three most frequently chosen problems are all directly connected with human industrial activity, whereas biodiversity loss attracts far less attention.
In my region, the most urgent environmental problem is the pollution of local rivers, which suffer from industrial waste and litter. To solve it, factories should install modern purification systems, and young people could organise regular clean-up campaigns along the banks.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that environmental protection is extremely important for teenagers, because it is our generation that will have to live with the consequences of today's decisions. Therefore, we should start caring for nature right now.
