Nowadays, computer games have become an integral part of teenage leisure, and understanding why young people in Zetland are drawn to them is an important task. The table presents the results of an opinion poll on the main reasons teenagers play computer games.
According to the data, the most popular reason is looking for entertainment, chosen by 46% of respondents. Making new friends is mentioned by 21% of teenagers, while improving mental skills is selected by only 13%.
A striking comparison can be made between entertainment and relaxation: the former is more than five times as popular as the latter, which is chosen by just 9% of respondents. This suggests that teenagers mostly see games as a fun pastime rather than a way to unwind. Interestingly, developing hand-eye coordination (11%) is slightly less common than improving mental skills (13%), showing that practical benefits are not the main motivation.
However, excessive gaming can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and poor academic performance. A possible solution is for parents and schools to encourage strict time limits and offer alternative activities, such as sports or creative clubs, so that gaming remains a balanced hobby.
