Пример ответа
Nowadays, people argue about whether schoolchildren should be given long reading lists for the summer holidays. In my opinion, it is not wrong to make pupils read in summer, provided the amount is reasonable.

Firstly, summer reading helps students keep the skills they developed during the school year. Without any practice, many pupils forget vocabulary and lose fluency, and in September teachers have to start from the beginning. Secondly, reading develops imagination and broadens the outlook, which no textbook can replace. Thirdly, a moderate list teaches children to plan their time, combining rest with short daily reading sessions.

However, some people think that summer exists for rest, not for study. They point out that pupils already spend nine months at school and need a break to restore their energy. Moreover, they say that compulsory reading kills the love of books, because children begin to see literature as a boring duty.

I cannot fully agree with this position. A reasonable list of two or three books does not take much time, and children still have plenty of days for games and travel. As for the loss of interest, it usually happens when adults choose dull books or demand written reports; if the titles are interesting, pupils often read more than required.

To sum up, summer reading is beneficial when it is sensible and well organised. Therefore, I firmly believe that asking pupils to read a little in summer is absolutely right.
