Nowadays, students' motivation is a widely discussed issue, and many people believe that exams are the best way to make young people study harder. Others, however, doubt whether pressure really encourages learning. In my opinion, exams do motivate students, although this motivation has clear limits.

To begin with, an exam creates a definite goal with a fixed date, and this helps learners organise their time and finally open their textbooks. Moreover, marks matter for the future: good results open the doors to universities and well-paid jobs, so students have a strong practical reason to work hard. Finally, regular tests show learners their weak points, which encourages them to improve instead of repeating the same mistakes.

On the other hand, some people argue that exams mainly cause stress and fear, and that frightened students remember less rather than more. They also point out that many learners cram facts the night before the test and forget them immediately afterwards, so real knowledge does not grow.

I cannot fully agree with this position. Stress is not caused by exams themselves but by poor preparation, and a reasonable teacher can reduce it. As for cramming, it is a sign of bad study habits rather than a proof that exams are useless; without any assessment, many students would not study at all.

In conclusion, although exams have disadvantages, I am convinced that they motivate students to study harder and to take responsibility for their own progress.
